Central School Swimming Sports.

Those who attended the Central School Swimming Sports, held in the Becreation Grounds lako on Thursday afternoon, must have been surprise! and gratified at the proficiency the scholars of the school have attained in the natatorial art. The credit of this progress in a commendable direction is duo to tho head master, Mr H. Dompsoy, assisted by Messrs O. Johnson and A. Gray, tho assistant masters, who have spared neither time nor trouble to instruct the boys in such a necessary accomplishment as swimming. The sports were x well patronised, notwitstanding the unseasonable weather. Tho Town Band attended and played an excellent programme, which was greatly appreciated by the spectators. Refreshments were dispensed in, two marquees, one being devoted to > the sale of fruit, etc., while the qther was used by a number of ladies for dispensing afternoon tea. The programme of twenty-five items could not be completed, as when the sixteenth event was finished a heavy and continuous thunderstorm compelled the management to postpone the balance of events till next Thursday. Mrs fowling, Mrs Mar| tin, Miss Arrow, and Miss Evans baa charge of the refreshments arrangements, and, together with the pupil teacher* and senior girls, carried out their duties admirably. Messrs Cattley, ActingChairman of the Town School Committee, and Mr A. B. E. Fookes, the secretary of same, were present and gave assistance. Capt. Hood and Mr A. H. Holmes acted as judges, and Mr F. Stohr filled the position of starter, and handicapped the old boys' race, which proved a close and exciting finish. The following are the results of events: — Maiden "Race, l>t heat— Heldt, 1: B.
