The Imperial Troops.
VISIT- NOT ABANDONED. WIRE FROM MR WARD. The Mayor, Mr E. Doekrill, received the subjoined wire from the Acting-Premier the Hon. J. G. Ward, to-day (Wednesday) — " For your information, I think it onlj right to inform you early this morning that the reported stoppage of tb< Britannic with the Imperial troops ir Melbourne is only temporary. I received official advice last night of the temporary stoppage, and also that the visit is still tc be made. The delay in Melbourne -will in my opinion, render it impossible foi the steamer to arrive by Saturday, whicl was at first arranged. Udder the alteret circumstances, I think possibly it woujc be better for all parties if the date o: arrival can be deferred until the followinj week. This will, of course, alter tb< dates of arrival at the other centre: throughout the colony. » In any case, a: soon as l,am in a position to advise yoi definitely, you can depend upon it beinj done.— J. G. Ward." . This is in reference to a Melbourne cable stating that the Imperial troops have been instructed to remain there til. further orders.
