MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE FROM MAORI CHIEFTAINS.
[PER PRESS ASSOCIATION, i Wellington, January 24/ — The Government yesterday received telegrams, from Hone Heke, Ngaruhi ELurawai Te Aupuri, nnd Ngata' Whatua, prominent northern ohief tains, as follows :— '"Deoply grieved over t very sad news announcing the -death of> Her- Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria. Kindly convey through the Government our deep and heartfelt sympathies to the Prince of Wales and people of Great Britain. If there is any public action your Government intends taking by which we can help in a small way kindly keep me informed. — (Signed) Honk Hkkb." Miri Hanatu, of Wairangi, also telegraphed on behalf ef a number of Maoris;
— "Qtieen fa dead. Accept our sympathy. ' tionglive the King." The following reply has been sent, to both tribes by the Hon. WV C- Walker: — " In the absence of the PrfettAer and Acting-Premier your telegram containing your pathetic expressions of grief at the death of our great and good Queen were opened by me.
