Martcw; January 21.— Shortly iffer midnight a fire broke out in .tge* &90t portion of David Hallam's store a.t Hunterville, and quickly spread, to the adjoin* ing premises. Fifteen shops, mi the Argyle Hotel were destroyed. The premises destroyed were as folt lows: -W. C. Hancock (saddler), C. Bnf ("hairdresser), J. McEldowiaey (draperl Argyle Hotel, Ryan (tailor), >Argjli stables, A. E. Remington (chemist), Skerman & Ce. (new premises), Mrs Currie (fruiterer), G. W. D. Large sheets of iron were placed ; against a portion of Argyle stables. This prevented the fire from attacking the Argyle Hall and shops adjoining. Messrs Ellis Bros and Valder's store was damaged considerably, and it was onjy with the assistance of wet blankets that the building was saved from being dq< streyed.
