Speaking at the tiafbotir Bdard meeting thia (Friday ),after»*©« the Chairman mentioned that the present was the last meeting before the election, and he wished to thank members for the courtesy and consideration that had always been extended to him. He had, he said, always felt it an honour to be Chairman of the Board, and he had endeavoured to do his best in the interests of tbe district and town. The satisfactory state of matters at the port at the present time was indeed gratifying, and he thought he could safely say that the back of the greatest difficulty that they had to contend against — the sand — had been broken. Mr Hignett said the good feelings spoken of by the Chairman were mutual. Expressing a personal opinion he was quite satisfied that the Board had an able and efficient Chairman and he hoped to see Mr Maxwell back again. The annual report read that day indicated a very satisfactory state of things at the harbour, the improvement in the port during the past two or three years being very marked, while the cost of dealing with the sand had been reduced to a minimum. Mr Sarten stated that the only objection he had to the Chairman was that he did not give other members the same chances as he took himself.
