Received August 29, 9.M) p.m. London', August 28. — The battle between the British and the Boar continues General Taller has captured Bergendaal, a very s.rong positiou to the north-west of Dalmanitha, with comparatively small loss. Thirteen degrocs of frost is being experienced at Dalmanatha. The health of the troops is excellent. Received August 59, 12.50 p.m. London, August 29. — General Bruce Hamilton captured General Ollivier at the same time his sons were taken. The forces under Major - General Baden Powell and Lieut General Paget are quitting tha dense bush veldt at Nylstrooai and returning to Pretoria. Twenty-five of De Wet's force were captured northwards of Pretoria. General Buller has driven the Boers from the position at Bergendaalj Received August 30, 10.20 a.m. London, August 29.— General Buller has occupied Machadodorp, and General French has taken Elandsfontein. Received August 30, 9.34 am. i Lon*don, August 29. — President Kruger has gone to Pilgrim's Rest," north-east of Lydenburg. At' Machadodorp half of tho gunners were killed. , General Buller has turned Bergendal, a knotty wooded knoll, the defenders of which -were chiefly Johannesburg police. The attacking force consisted of Inniskilling Fusiliers and the 2nd Battalion of the Rifle Brigade and Devons. The enemy made the most determined stand since that at Pietcr's Hill, Natal. After three hours' incessant shelling from forty guns, some of the enemy were Been moving about and working a pompom. The only approach to tho position was by an open glacis 2500 yards away. The infaatry advanced at double over the last 500 yards of the distance, and with fixed bayonets charged the foe, capturing the commandant and nineteen men. Many were found killed by lyddite in the trenches. The British pom-poms shelled the retreating enemy. The British lost 12 killed and about 60 wounded A Boer pom-pom was captured. . Lord Roberts said it was a fine performance ; General Buller managed his troops very skilfully, and the combination of artillery and infantry fire was most effective. Dalwig, a cousin of the Krnpps, who was commanding , the artillery attached to the -Bethel commando, was mortally wounded at Ermels. j General French is at Schwarti kopjes I on the Lydenbnrg Road, where the Boers ■ are retreating. Unofficial advices received at Delagoa Bay state that the' Boers at Manchadodcrp were defeated with heavy loss and compelled to abandon their guns. Some of the Liverpools who escaped from an ambush into which two companies recently fell declare .that the Boers on approaching held their rifles above their heads as a sign of surrender, and fired when within 50 yards of the British. They subsequently deliberately killed the wounded men.
