FOOTBALL.

STAR I. V. STRATFORD I. Forty-four points to nil ! That was the number of points put up by the Star seniors in the match against Stratford at Fitzroy on Thursday, and it is no exaggeration to say thvt the result gives a fair idea of the game. The visitors entered the field two men short, but wcie afterwards augmented by the arrival of O'Connor, a sterling forward player. It was not so much, however, in ths frout ranks that Stratford were wanting. Their back division seemed to bo lamentably weak. Throughout ths struggle no attempt was -made io s°nd the ball out among the three quarters, while, on tho other hand, the Stars adopted passing tactics, and seemed to be <ible to score almost when they wanted. The first eleven points, were put up in as many minutes, and 24 were registered at the end of 25 minutes' play. Tries were scored by Hardgraves (5), Allen (3), Bellringer (2), Davidson (1) and George (1), four of which wore converted by Stroud. A Humphries and L. Allen were, as usual, responsible for the scoring. Allowing for the fact that they were weakly opposed the form exhibited by these two players came up to past displays ; their judgment in passing and skill in working tho field never seemed at fault, and every opening was promptly seized upon. Tho Club has also some promising material in Hardgraves and Sturmey, two of last year's juniors. They t^ke (he ball well, arc fleet footed, and are dangerous on the attack. It would be invidious to particularise the forwards on the day's play ; they appeared to hardly, as one of them afterwards expressed H, "turn a hair." Among the visitors F. Bayly, Smart, O'Connor, and Browning were most conspicuous. Mr E. Humphries was tho referee. : ' TUKAPA I. Y. INGLEWOOD I. The Tukapa seniors visitel Tnglewood the same afternoon. The g.ime was closolj' contested, ending in a draw, neither side scoring. JUNIOR MATCHES. , y The Tukapa-Inglewood frst juniot|«^ contest resulted in a win for the tqwn^ team by 11 points to nil. and the Star 111. y, Tukapa 111. finish jd without either team scoring.
