Mr Coleridge Farr has been invests gating for a suitable site for the Magnetic Observatory, and vidted the eastern and southern coasts of Otago and Southland, from Dunedin to Orepuki, also Stewart's Island. He found considerable alteration had taken place since the last observations, from -what is known as secu'ar variation. As uniformity is desired it is improbable the observatory can be placed jq the localities mentioned, and Mr Farr will now visit Christchurch. INFECTION OF MEAT. A deputation of butchers waited on the Mayor and asked him to get the City Council to introduce a local Bill to place Wellington ia the same petition a-: Dunedin with regard to abattoirs and inspection of meat. It was suggested that master butchers should be licensed and the fees applied to the maintenance of the abattoirs. The Mayor exprewed himself ia favour of the scheme, and promised to bring the matter before the Council. TAILORS' DISPUTE. No progress was made with the tailors' dispute by the Concitliation Board, as th i chairmau ruled that the matter was still not properly before them. Sycenham Borough Council and others, heard before Mr Denniston to-day, ia which £500 was claimed for the death of Mr Edward Harper, killed on August 18 by colliding ou a bicycle with an unlighted night-cart owned by defendant corporation, a verdict was given for his mother for £300 damages and scale costs.
