Received October 7, 1.17 a.m. Washington, October 6.— American newspaper* talk of the necessity of making a naval demonstration on the Spanish coast. Received October 7, 9.50 a.m. Sydney, October 7.— Eastern news states that Manila is gradually assuming a peaceful aspect ; public affairs are be- . ing conducted smoothly and efficiently under the military governorship of General Merritt.
