Some fairly extensive alterations to the New Plymouth Gaol are contemplated. The British warship Terrible has been ordered to join the Paoific Squadron. At Invercargill on Wednesday a bicyclist was awarded £425 damages against a horseman who rode him down. Coal owners in Lancashire are discharging infirm and elderly miners, in order to minimise their liabilities under the compensation scheme. There is on view at Mr Braund's furniture shop a handsome mantelpiece designed and made by Mr O. Johnson which is offered for sale. ' At Greymouth on Tuesday night Weber's Cycle Factory was destroyed by fire, and adjoining premises occupied by Gleunon and Arnott and Soarbrook were partially destroyed. His Excellency the Governor is expected to spend a few days in New Plymouth at the beginning of December, and he has consented to present the certificates in connection with the St. John Ambulance classes. M. de Rougemont is evidently paying a flying visit to the scene of his marvellous adventures. A Melbourne cable informs us that police reports from Apollo Bay state that a brilliantlylighted balloon passed over the district. A field glass.Bb.owed a car hanging to it. The affair is mysterious -except we adopt the Rougemont theory. At the Amuri Cattle Fair, Culverden, last week 137 Bfceers from Mr D. Ruther*ford s estate made an average of £10 ss. 6d a head, and 68 heifers averaged £7 Bs, the competition being probably the most active ever seen at the sale of a similar lot cattle in the South Island. Steers were about £4 a head higher than a year ago [ and heifers from £2 or £3 higher! At this sale a Oh riat church auctioneer put through 25 lots of fufc cattle in 17 minutes. Gyclo Cloths ju»t opened iv Fawns, Orads, Greys, and llussee Green. Beautiful quality and to be cleared cheap. -rH. W. Cqttj.ee & CQ.-Advt, *
