STRATFORD NEWS.

[FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.] August 3. —The Mayoral election is fixed for September Ist, and the sth is the date for election of Councillors. A strong requisition has been made to Mr E. Burgess, Chairman of tho Town Board, to allow himself to be nominated for Mayor, and that gentleman has acceded. One or two other candidates are spoken of, bnt so far there is no one else definitely out. A public meeting was held last evening to make arrnDgements for the receptionof the Governor and Lady Rnnfurly on the 7th Sept. A Reception Committee was appointed, and afterwards met, ' and decided to submit a programme for His Excellency's approval. On arrival of the special train the school children will siug the National Anthem, the bond furnishing an accompaniment. The Mayor, Councillors, &c, will then be introduced, the inevitable addreßa will be read, and then luncheon will be served in the Masonic Hall. This sacred rite performed, a visit to Iha new dary j factory will follow and then, if ihe elements are propitious, a drive fora few miles. Returning to Stratrord, afternoon tea will be served prior to the departure ot the special train. A bill will finish the evening.

The pnblic meeting last night seemed at one time to be bent on making an ass of itself but "the common Beose of most" happily prevailed. There eeems to be, in impression that because the town is young and small, and the people not exactly millionaires, that it will be impossible, to properly entertain guests of distinction. This srises from the innate snobbery of the -British mind that cannot disassociate dignity from frock-coats, bull-toppsrs, gold plate aud marble halls. ,
