BOROUGH COUNCIL.

THIS DAY. Thr formal installation of Mr Dockrill as Mayor for the onsuiug year took place on Wednesday morning. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Messrs Atery, Bellringer, Brooking, Carthew, Corkill, Walton, Ward, and Teed. The Mayor - elect feigned the usual declaration. Before installing Mr Dockrill, the retiring Mayor said that he wished to express his appreciation of the assistance rendered by the late Town Clerk, Caotain Uempton, and the present Town Clerk, and Borough Surveyor, without adding furthei to the remarks made at ihe last meeting of the Council. He then installed Mr Dockrill into the Mayoral chair. His Worship made a few remarks, expressing the hope that the kindly and amicable relations which had prevailed in the Council in the past would continue, and that at tho close of his term he mighfbe able to feel that ho had .given the satisfaction he desired to do. Mr Bellringer congratulated Mr Dockrill on hia accession to the Mayoralty, assuriug him. that he would have the support of the Council in upholding the dignity o£ the chair and conducting the business of the Council. A special meeting of the Council was held on tho question of taking over Egmont street. A letter was received from Mr It. C. Ilughoa, suggesting tint the name of tbe street be changed from Egtnont to '' Ariki' to perpetuate the name of the historic native pah which stood on Mouut Eliot. A lengthy discussion took place on the question. Mr Teed moved an amendment to the effect that the street be not taken over until it was built upon on both sides.— This lapsed for want of a seconder. Mr Corkill considered that there wore far too many Egmontsabout, and favored the change of name. The following resolution was passed on the motion o£ Mr Bell ringer, seconded b? Mr Carthew.l That the private street in the Borough of New Plymouth hitherto called or known an Egmont street, extending from Devon street to St Aubyn street, with a width of 1066 links, be declared a public street, and that the street be henceforth called and known as "Ariki Street," and thqfc this special order shall come into foice on the Ist March, 1898.
