STRATHMORE.

[fkom our own correspondent, j

Mr Philipps, our pioneer storekeeper, Las just sold his business here to Messrs Sells &Biernachi. Both gentlemon.are well and favourably known in this district, Mr Sells having been in Mr Philipps' employ for the past twelve months, and Mr Biernachi being one of the first settlers in the Mangaere block lam sure everyone hero wishe3 them success in their nsw venture, and although we are sorry to lose Mr Philipps, who has always taken a leading part when anything was in hand for the advancement of the district, we are glad to find that his, successors are men well known to us all. Mr Piiilipps intends, I hear, as soon as he has got things settled up here, to take a trip ■ to the Old Country and expects to be { away for about a year, but as he still has some interests in land, &c, about here, he fully iutends returning to these parts. There has been some great changes since Mr Phillips came here Borne three years or so ago. At that time the road "was not made as far aa this, and Mr Phillips had the greatest difficulty in getting the material for the store on to the site, the timber costing him as much as 22s 6d a hundred feet by the time it was delivered. Now there is a formed road 20 miles past here, although lam sorry to say not a metalled one, and a large increase in settlement all over the district. Mr Jacobs, who is so well known as a successful bullock driver on the road, has bought Mr Philipps' teams and is now carting on his own account.
