The monthly meeting was held on Monday. Prtsent : Messrs Okey (Chairinnn), Horrocks, Price, McDonald, WoCullum, Lepper, Caddy, and Tate. The Parihaka foreman reported that he required 400 extra yards metal.— Mr Caddy thought the Council conld cut down some of tbo metal expenditure, and Boe to tho bridges. He said the Mnugahume bridge should be re-orected, as it was past repair and in a dangerous state. The Waiteiki bridge needed repairs, with concrete pier and wings, at a total cost of £85. The Waiaua bridge nsdded repairing. Tho Te Ngamu bridge noeded repairs, and he recommended the shortening of the structure by putting ia censreto piers. The cost would be about £75. The other bridges and culverts in the Biding wore in a fair state, but in some instances the decking in places needed renewing.— Mr Leppor asked how much the report had coifc. — Tho Chair man : The carpenter is on a weekly wage, but does not actually start bis engagement until to-morrow. — Mr J. Stewart, engineer, reported on tin state of the Waiaua bridge. — Mr Ilorrocks : What does tho carpenter »ay about tho bridge ? < — Tho Clerk : The carpenter states that 600 feec of timber would put the bridge in a fairly good btato of repair.— Mr Ilorrocks : The carpenter does n»t mtintibn anything nbout tho bracing mentioned by the engineer. — Mr Loppor said he coutd not sec why tho Council wantod tiro reports on the bridge. — The Chairman replied that the engineer had been instructed to report before the carpenter was appointed. — The plans of tho proposed new bridge at Maug&bume were laid on tho table and ia^ptcted. — The Chairman said the n«w bridge would cose £241', and this added to cost of repairs to other bridges would bring the total expenditure up to about £400. — Mr Price said be conld not see how the Parihaka Riding could afford such expenditure. The riding had only £376 odd to credit, and £50 had to come out of this for metal — Mr McCnllum : You are wrong ;it ia over £500. If you want tho figures I can give them to you. —Mr McCullam then moved, That ths Council build a new bridge over the ' Mangahume river. The Chairman seconded.— Mr McCnlium reckoned that if Mr Price wa« going to insist on strict riding expenditure thin it was time the expenditure of the Council was allocated according to the Counties Act. — Mr Ilorrocks opposed the expenditure, as the Council could not bear such a strain. If the settlers wanted a bridge they should rato tbomselve- to nuet the expenditure lilea cottiers did In his district. — Mr Caddy supported the' expenditure. — Mr Price opposed. He said the legitimate way of raising rovonuo for the bridge was by tolling it. Ho said it was only the beginning of expenditure as other bridges in tho Parihaka Biding were fit to tuaiblt down. — Mr McCullum : You ehpnld be called to order.— Mr McDonald •aid the bridga was in a dangorona utate, and ihonld b» rebuilt.— Mr Tate supported th» expenditure. — The motion was pnt and carried, Messrs Horrocks and Price voting against. Mrß. Dawes and Mr C. 8. Bjoth, Hurford Boad, wrote complaining of nigutsoil being spread over land in that vicinity. The latter said he would have to leave tho district if the nuisanco was continued. -The Chairman said he had spoken to the contractor, who promised to take stops to abate the nuisance. - A. r Tata asked if tbo Council had control over tho rivers He said during the last fresh in the Waiongona three cattle carcases were brought down, and ho had no doubt the bodies were, put jn to save burial.— The whole matter was finally adjourned till next meeting. , The Waitara Town Board wrote asking the Council to metal McLean-street full width from Cracroft-streefc. — Loft over till next meeting. Mr Blacka.'l waited on the Council relative to his contract in the Parihaka Biding. The Council will pay 75 per cent on the amount of work don«, and get the foreman to report upon the contract. The Mangorei Dairy Factory wrote for permission to use channel at the side of county road as a water race. Permission will bo granted subject to report of engineer boing favorable, cost of such rup&rt to be borno by the company. Acconnts amounting to £495 11s 8d wero pawed for payirient".
