STRATFORD NEWS.

[FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.] Augost 31.— Mr James Sharrock, the eminent conductoi of oxen, was arraigned on Thursday, before the S.M., on a charge of having, contrary to tho county by-law in such case made and provided, used on the County Road an unlicensed bullockdray with tires of leas than eight inches in width, to wit seven inches. The case was proved by the County Engineer, and as the defendant had expressed his intention of continuing to set the regulation at nought, he waß fined the full penalty of £5. Mr Sharrock was desirous of entering upon a discussion with the S.M, as to the wisdom and expediency of the by-law, but Mr Brabant declined the argument on the ground that his duty was confined to the enforcement of the law. good or bad. At the same Court Mr George Mauser, a gentleman who appears to be imbued with a strange liking for the wroag side of the lock-up, was charged by Constable Carr (at present relieving Constable O'Donovan) with having no visible means of Buppoit. He had approached the constable on the previous evening with a request to be locked up, otherwise, he explained, he should feel it incumbent upon him to break a window. A ccording to police records this sort of thing is Mr Mauser's frequent "custom of an,afternoon." He was discharged on condition that he at once sought fresh fields and pastures new. The Education Board has appointed a committee to enquire into the expediency of establishing a District High School in conneotion with the Stratford School. It ifl understood that about thirty pupils would be forthcoming for a start.
