EDUCATION BOARD.
The Education Board net on Wednesday. Present : Miss Heywood, Messrs Bauchope (chairman), Hill, Fault, Adlam, Allsworth, Ambury, Mackay, and Wade. The architect's report was read. Tho Chairman whs authorised to aupplya new grate to tho Fitzroy school ; and the architect was instructed to report, at next meeting, on too condition of tho chimney at Upland Road school. The question of fencing tbe school site at Mangaerewas referred to tho Chairman to deal with. Mr Thompson's letter of May 23, and sketch showing fencing reqa» r ed at Pukearuhe school site was referred to Mr Faull to enquire into and report at noxt meeting. The architect was instructed to prepare, and lay before noxt meeting of the Board, a schedule showing tbe schools that require painting inside and li'iing. Mr Young 3 claim for assisting to placo the furniture in the Mangaoro school was referred to the Mangaere Committee for them to express an opinion on. A sum of £6 was granted to the Town Committee towards thb cost of enforcing the compulsory clauses of the Act in the New Plymouth school district. • The Board decided that tho Oakiira school district be divided, and the following new districts formed as provided by section 36 of the Act, viz, : — Oakura district, and Hurford Road and Omata district. ■• Mr H. H. Pinknoy, of Napier, wrote asking tho Board for a testimonial with respect to his management of the NewPlymouth High School while in charge of it during Mr Pridham'fl absence. , The letter was referred to the Chairman with power to act. The Chairman was authorised to supply desks and »eats required at Frankley Road school. The Board considered the potition against the validity of the Oakura School Committee election, also the counter petition in favour of the eleotion. Tho Board resolved that the election was valid, and decided to ask the Committeo to recommend a gentleman to be appointed a member of the Committee to make up the requisite number. Mr U. W. Gane forwarded accounts for firewood supplied to Ngariki school. Mr Allsworth moved, and Mr Hill seconded, That Blinkhorn and Co.'s account for firewood be paid, but the secretary inform Mr Gano that the Board considers tbe price charged exorbitant. — Mr Mackay moved as an amendment. That the account for firewood be riot paid till the Chairman has bad a consultation with the Inspector as regards tko cost, which tbe Board considers excessive, and has ascertained the usual charge in the district. Mr Ambury seconded. The amendment was carried. Ayes (5), Miss Heywood, Messrs Wade, Mackay, Ambury, and Faull ; Noes (4),. Messrs Adlam, Allswoi fcj, Hill, and the Chairman. Tho names ot the following candidates will be forwarded to the committees interested from which to recommend for appointment : — Rahotu : Miss L. Chapman, Messrs R. A. Malcolm, W. R. i Taylor, R. E. Dowling, and H. L.Kidd. Upper Kent Road: Miss Irvine, MrH. L. Kidd, Misses J. Anderson, E. F. Riiey, Messrs J. M. West and W. R. Taylor. Mangaere : Musses M. Irvine, E. F. Rilej , Messrs H. L. Kidd, J. M. West, and W. R. Taylor. Inglewood : A. B. Charters, E. A. Malcolm, W. Berry, W. E. Burley, J. Lowe, J. M. West, and E. H. Andre wp. Several matters were held over, and the Board decided to hold a special meeting on Thursday, June 4, at the usual hour. Accounts amounting to £929 11s 7d were passed. The Board adjourned.
