Welungtok, May 16.' The Upolu had a narrow escape from stranding on the voyage to Westport yesterday afternoon. When off Sinclair | Heads the weather became very thick and the land was lost sight of. r J)he captain gave orders for the vessel to go dead slow, and shorty afterwards the haze lifted, and it -was seen that the vessel was only about a ship's length off the rocka In Oterangi Bay. He immediately gave orders for full speed astern. Those in the engine room thought the vessol struck, but those on deck were of a contrary opinion. The captain Bounded, and found the vessel making no water, but he decided to return to Wellington. A diver made an examination tliis morning, and found not the slightest trace of any injuries. The captain attributea the fact of being five or six miles out of the course to the thick weather, and an ebb tide catching the vessel on the port bow aud setting her inshore. A HAWERA APPEAL CASE. The Court of Appeal unanimously granted a new trial in the case of Regina v Farrell and others, on the ground that the public examination of Farrell, in bankruptcy, was not a declaration by him in pursuance of the common design charged. The Court ordered the accusrd, who are in custody, to be admitted to bail before justices at Hawera, each in £100, and one surety of .£SO. HOROWHENUA COMMISSION. The Horowhenua Commission held a final sitting here this afternoon. A number of natives were present, and after re-examining Sir Walter Buller on certain points, and taking the evidence of the land valuers, the Commissioners intimated that their report would be forwarded, as usual, to the Governor.
