DEATH UNDER CHLOROFORM.

Invergargill, May 14. — Alexander Mv iro, an early settler, dropped dead in the street on his way home. He appeared to be in robust health. Apoplexy was the cause of death.

A most lamentable accident occurred yesterday to Lucy "Williams, wife of a laboring man at Duck Crock 131uff Road. She was cooking at an open fire, and, reaching up to hang a pan, her skirt took fire. She was immediately in a blaze. Her children ran out screaming, and attracted the attention of their father, who was working some distance away. When he reached the house he found hia wife on her hands and knees, her clothing burnt off, aud frightfully injured. She died this forenoon. The poor creature was only id, and leaves a family of ten. Wellington, May 14. — At the inqusst on the hoy Kilsby, who died under chloroform, tho evidence showed that all precautions were taken. His death was a pure misadventure, aud a verdict was returned accordingly. Dr Chappie was asked if he could explain why there had boon so many deaths of late in the colony while patients weie under the influeuce of chloroform. He replied that he could not give an explanation, except that climatic conditions might have had something to do with the matter. He had performed 134 operations under chloroform, and the present was the first death.

Napier, May 15. — A shocking accident happened at Hastings last night. A boy named Peter Jarvis, aged 16, was riding with the mail to Mr J. C. Williama' plaoo at Frimley when he cam* into collision with a cart driven by a boy named Gibbs, and was thrown to the ground. The cart passed over him, completely disemboweling the unfortunate lad, whose case is hopeless.
