PUBLISHED D A I L Y. FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 1896.

The annual election of School Committees will take place on Monday next, when householders will have to appoint five, seven, or nine of their number, as the case may be, to discharge the duties appertaining to the position of School Committeenicn for the ensuing twelve months. These duties, if properly carried out, are not of the lightest, especially in country districts. School Committees are tin* direct lepri'sentutives of the pai ents in the system of go vernment of our school system, and on them rests the responsibility of electing the members of the Education Board, who have the main control of educational matters. On the Committees, also, falls to some extent tliechoice of teachers, for although the Board makes thy appointment, yet it is paitially guided by the opinions and wishes of the Committees. Then, again, they ha\ c to look after the school attendance, to see that it kept up to a fair percentage of the scholars on the roll, for unless the average attendance is well maintained, the capitation grant in cm tailed, and the quality of instruction imparted must sooner or later suffer. To the Committees is entrusted the care of the schools and schoolgrouuds, and they are responsible to the Board for tbe order and repair in which these are kept. In Taranaki, as a general rule, there is little or no friction between the Board and the Committees, ami tii is is as it should be. Occasions must sometimes arise when there will be differences of opinions, but where all have the cause of the education of the young at> heart, these are easily surmounted. 'It therefore behoves parentß and householders to attend the various meetings on Monday next, and take an active interest in electing the best available men to take charge of these matters for the next twelve months.
