FIRE!

TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, — Allow mo to add one word to the communication of " Playgoer," and that is to ask you to be good enough to furnish the public with the exact powers that our Town Conncil possesses in this matter. It would perhaps be possible then to obtain a concerted expression of opinion in form of petition or public meeting, which would indicate to our City Fathers their plain duty The risks are so plain, and all sections of the community so directly interested, in the possibility of disaster, that they fully justify action, and that should be immediate, else we may have a painful object lesson to drive home what should be foreseen and so averted. — I am, &c,

Non-Playgoer. [We are under the impression that beforn the alterations were made at the Hall plans were submitted to the Firo Committee of the Borough Council, and approved by them, so that it is difficult to see how they can now interfere. Our correspondent is perhaps not aware though, that in case o£ fire, a means of escape from the dress circle is afforded by the windowß opening on to thu top of tbe verandah. -Ed. T.H.]
