A MINING EXPERT.

By the mail boat which arrived at Auckland on Wednesday, Dr. A. Scheidel, E.M., was a passenger. For five years he was connected with mining operations in the northern part of New Zealand, and in connection with the Sylvia mine he was one of the scientific pioneers whose ilofcion has drawn ■world-wide attention to the gold-producing capabilities of the Hauraki field. Shortly after his arrival a New Zealand Herald representative saw Dr. Scheidel. He had, he said, of course, followed the progress of New Zealand mining. He w&s going again over the ground he had known some years ago. He would not say anything very definite, but from the geological conditions he knew, and the experience ho already had, he foresaw a *»-rilliaut future for the district. Iv that he referred to the whole of the Upper Thames district. '•' Taking the mineral resources of New Zealand," said Dr. Scheidel, " up to the present; what has been done is simply experiment, with the exception of one or two big concerns. New Zealand has much to lewn from California, which, so to speak, is New Zealand's next door neighbour. Modern goldmining has practically its home in California. Dr Scheidel, who has come out to rei port on various mines, and who has come direct f r6m London, was asked as to his opinion of the London market, and as to the " slump" said to exist there. Did he think this was likely to operate against New Zealand mine?, was asked. " No. Ido not think so " was the roply. "In conscquenco of the success of the Waihi, the \Vnitekauri, and other companies, an excellent reputation ha been established in London lor New Zealand mining properties. The regularity of tho returns from Iho W.iihi mine has destroyed the idea of the patchiness ol Now Zealand mining properties. There is no doubt now that mining will take its place as an industry.'
