ANOTHER POET.

An up-country editor had recently a terrible bad time of it with the new reporter. An advertisement of Day and Martin's celebrated blacking came'in by post, and, as the price paid by the firm was a good one, the editor thought it ■would be a gracefnl act on his part to boom the historical ' shiner.' At first he thought ot writing aleading article on the advantages of personal appearance, and thought of beginning that a man could be known by the blacking that he used. On second thoughts, however, he determined to get the new reporter to write a special crossbead article on Day and Martin's blacking. As soon as the reporter began the editor glanced over his shoulder and read the heading. Great Scott 1 he exclaimed. "What a heading for an article on blacking — ' Painting the Lily ! ! ! ' The reporter tore up his copy, and determined to drop into poetry, and got off the following :—: — " When every morn to honest toil You think of gaily startin', Go like a shining knight — that is, A shining Day — in Martin !" The editor paid him a week s wages in advance, and told him to cable home to the firm to see if they wanted a poet laureate. If they did not, the reporter was advised to purchase brushes, box. and a pot of Day and Martin, and try a Bourkestreet comer — he was destined, like tie blacking, to ' shine ' there.
