. „ STAR 11. V. TUKAPA. The first meeting this season of these two teams for the Junior Cup took plkce in the Eecroation Grounds on Thursday, in the presence of a large numbor of spectators, and contrary to general expectations resulted in a win for the Star by 7 points (try and goal from a mark) to nil. Both sides put strong teams in the field. Mr H. Spurdle, of Waitara, acted as referee, and Messrs J. Elliot and P. Bellringer as Hue umpires. In the first half tho gatna was keenly contested, the play being principally confined to the forwards. Petty and Galloway went near potting a goal apieco for Tukapa in this half, and Stroud for Star made a fine shot for goal from a mark. Immediately after the second spell started Bellringer got on a rush, and carried the ball over and scored a try. No goal resulted. Scores— Star, 3 ; Tukapa, 0. Play became fast and furious for a time, the Stars making several attempts to crosa the Tukapa lines. From a mark made by Sadler Stroud kicked a neat goal, bringing the Star Bcore tip to 7 points. From this out the play was give and take, the Tukapa towards the finish making desperate attempts to score, but failed. Time was called without any alteration in the score. The play was not of a dashing order, the backs getting but little show, and when they did manage to get hold of tht ball their efforts were soon smothered by the fast following up of tho forwards, For the winners, Hurray and Ford, at wing, shaped well, the former, a new player, being especially prominent. Soma of the backs were palpably off. but they made no mistakes to jeopardise their chance. F. Laduer, at centre half, played a useful game. The forwards all played well. For the losers, Petty played the best back game, and Elliot and Nolan also put in some good work. Galloway seamed to have lost the dash he has shown in previous matches. The forwards shaped well. Once during the game it looked as if fisticuffs were going to be resorted to, but the referee very promptly aud properly nipped the little exhibition in the Mr R. E, Fair promised a new ball tc tho winners of the ,Star-Tukapa match, and Mr J. Avery has accordingly, at Mi Fair's request, handed a ' Kia-ora ' brand ball to the Star team. The shape of the oval is said to be perfection. The Clifton-Waimate Senior match, to be played at Waitara to-morrow, is creating great interest, and a hard game ia expected. The Waimato men will arrive at Waitara to-night, and the match will be started to-morrow in order to give them ample time to catch the 4 o'clock train. Kaitake met the Clifton 11. on Thursday, and put them down to the tune of 14 points to nil. The first .Tuuior Cup matches look like a ca«e of mixed pickles so far. Clifton beat Tukapa, Kaitake beat Star, Tukapa beat Kaitake, Star beat Tukapa, and Kaitake beat Clifton. The second Junior match, Tukapa 11. v. Tariki Road, was played on the latter 's ground on Thursday, and resulted in a draw, each side scoring a try. E. Bayly, of the Clifton team, is reported to have sustained an injury in tho match against Kaitake. Our Tariki correspondent writes : — " Tariki met the Tukapa 11. to-day in Mr G. Capper's paddock. The scores at the finish were : Tariki 3, Tukapa 3. J. Clarke scored the try for Tariki, and Simmons scored a try for Tukapa. It was one of the best matches ever played hero. Mr G. C. Heenan, of Waipuku, uctod as referee for tho match and gave every satisfaction to both sides. Sid Serjeant was knocked out for a time, but was soon right again. Tho game was a give and take one. I believe if Tariki were to practise well together they would bo very hard to beat. The takings at the gate was only 11s, whereas it might havo been a great deal more if everyone paid who went in to see the match. I don't soo that it is fair that one should pay and another not,"
