TOWN IMPROVEMENTS.
FISCHER'S BUILDINGS. Another building, which adds materially to tho architectural features of the town, and also shows that our business people have confidence in the future, has been erected for Mr J. Fischer, furniture dealer, on the site situated between Egmont-street and the Alexandra Hall. The structure, which is now receiving its finishing coats of paint, has a f ron tage of 24ft to Devon-street nnd 48ft to Egmontstreet. The first floor is devoted to two shopsi passage, and stairway. The corner shop is spacious and lofty, being 23ft by 20ft by 17ft high, and is lighted f'-om both streets by large plate glass windows, 12ft high by 16ft wide. The entrance to this shop is on the corner by a fine large door Bft 6h high by sft 6in wide, with plata glass panel. The other shop has a frontage to Egmont-street, and is 20ft by 18ft by 18ft high, and is also lighted by a jplate glass window 13ft wide by 12ft high, with entrance door to match. The passage or main Entrance is Bft. 3in. wide, and out of this rises a fine wide staircase leading to four large offices on the second floor, and, being well-lighted, command a splendid view of the town. The outside appearance of the building is tho same as that of the Alexandra Hall. The height of the corner from the footpath to top of tho finial is 44ft. — the highest shop buildings in New Plymouth. Mr Olave Deacon was the architect, and Mr M. J. Jones was the contractor. The work has been carried out m a most competent and workmanlike manner. The sub-contractors were : — Glazing, &c, Messrs Okeys, Arnold, & Earp ; painting, Mr A. Cleland; plumbing, Mr E. Howell.
