FUNERAL OF THE LATE MAJOR TUKE.

On Thursday afternoon tho last tribute of respect was paid to Major Arthur Tuke, S.M., by a large circle of Mends accompanying his remains to their -final resting place in the Te Henui cemetery. His death was somewhat unexpected by his friends in New Plymouth, and its announcement on Tuesday caused widespread feelings of regret. It, however, appears that Major Tuko had been in indifferent health for some time past, and recently a carbuncle had foimed in the lumber regions which must have caused intense agony to tho patient. A couple of weeks ago the carbuncle was lanced, and Major Tuke appeared to be progressing favourably, but notwithstanding he had every attention and care, bloodpoisoning set in from which he died. Tho body was conveyed from Opunake to New Plymouth in a hearse, tho arrival here being timed to be in front of Colonel Stapp's house at 2 p.m., where a large number of friends and general public had assembled. A number of wreaths were then placed on the coffin, being sent by Mr and Mrs Standish, Mrs John Anderson (Wanganui), Miss Govett, Captain and Mrs Capel, Miss Capel, Mrs Woyergang, Inspector and Mrs Thomson, and Misa Hursthouse. Tho funeral procession then formed, the Town Band being in front, the bearers consisting of Inspector Thomson, SurgeonMajor O'Carroll, Captain Capel, Mr Roy (Mayor of New Plymouth), Mr Standish, Mr Govett, and Mr Weston, walking on either side of tho hoarse. Then followod the sons of Major Tuke, Colonel Stapp, Rev. L. Tuke, of Napier (nephew of the dt ceased), the constabulary forco in chargo of Sergt. Dufiin, and a long line of carriages containing friendsof the deceased gentleman ; the volunteer force with the officers Major Ellis and Lieuts. Okey anc> Cock bringing up tho rear. On the cortege starting tho band played the mournful strain of tho "Dead March," and arriving at the cemetery the coffin was removed from tho hearse by bearera, and headed by Yen. Archdeacon Govett reading the service for the dead, tho procession of mourners entored the mortuary chapel. The second part of the service was then read by tho Rev. Mr Chapman, of Manaia. That part of tho ceremony having concluded the bearers again took charge of the coffin and heading the procession walked to tho gravo where tho Von. Archdeacon Govett concluded tho .service "Peace be to his ashes" was tho bonison solomnly uttered, wo are sure, by evoryone who took the last look at the coflin that contained one whom they esteemed in life. If a kind heart, a warm friendship, genial nature, and tho highest sonso of honor can endear tho memory of any individual in the hearts of those amongst whom he lived and moved, that individual was the lato Major Tuke, it is only therefore necessary for us to add that a gonuino sonso of sympathy is very generally felt and expressed for those who loved him best and will miss him most.
