COMMENTS ON HACK DERBY.
(By " Taihoa.")
The fifteen that were paid up for the Taranaki Hack Derby, on Saturday night, exceeded in number the expectations of the most sanguine. The field that will see the post will probably number nine, and this on paper should make a good backing race. Of the fifteen acceptors Voltigeur is reckoned not to possess a chance, on the grouud that he has not the condition or preparation to stay a mile and a-half under Derby weights. Silver Sea has won a Scurry race under catchweights, and this season she was reckoned to havo a say in sprint events, but sprint distances are different to a Derby run. xad at present, therefore, I will not have her on my side. Financier is one whose chance I fail to see, on the score of want of condition. Fish Oli, it is rumored, possesses a chance, on the ground that she has shown her connections a good turn of speed. The Friar is one I will have on my side, for not only did he get the Wanganui Derby distance, but he is in good buckle. Australina should run a good colt on his running this year, and he is another I reserve on my side. Tongonui and Bona Fide are two strangers from Warrengate. The former started in hack events at Feilding the other day, but did not get a place ; the latter is, I believe, a maiden. Crimson Streak has breed to recommend her, and, although she has not so far distinguished herself in the events she has started in, yet I will expect to see her run a good race in the Derby. Quid and Donovan are considered to possess an outside show. Trentham is another whose chance I consider good, and the Auckland colt Aughadowey must be placed in the same category. Ruby Twist, a half-brother to Irish Twist, started at Feilding the other day, but did not run prominently. Coo-ec's chance I fail to see. ■ Those that I expect to see the winner come from are : — The Friar, Australina, Crimson Streak, Trentham, and Aughadowey. My final selection I will give in due time.
