MIDHIRST.

[from our own correspondent.] • October 17. — The School Committee met on the Bth instant. Present: Messrs Rodgera (chairman), Serjeant, Fincham, and Jones. The members present expressed satisfaction at the improved attendance, the average attendance for the previous week 'having been 134. . The following resolutions were carried unanimously : — That this Committee tender a hearty vote of thanks to Miss Mackay and Miss Hirst for a donation of £2 11s, half proceeds of a successful concert, the sum being a very acceptable favour at this moment, as tho Education Board, thinking School Committees were getting too much, had resolved to curtail the allowance ; That tho Committee will clear out their part of the school drafe when the Road Board has done its portion ; That Messrs Clark and Finchani-l>e the visiting Committee for the month ; That Mr C. Fincham's account for boards and easela, £2 10s 6d, be passed for pay ment ; That Messrs Fineham' and Scott arrange for seats in the porches and cloak room ; that the salary for quarter due to Mrs Clark be paid when due. Since then the Road Board and Committee have cleared out the school drain and water tables rouud the school.

The monthly meeting of the Band,o£ Hope was held in the Wesleyan Church on Friday, the sth instant. There was a good attendance, and the entertainment was as successful as usual.

A. social and dance, to celebrate the first anniversary of the Midhirst Lodge, 1.0.0 F., M.U., was held in the hall on the instant. There -was a largo attendance, and the proceedings and proceeds "were of a highly satisfactory character throughout. The hall was- very tastefully decorated. Mr E. Bnrgess, N.G. of the Lodge, presided, and referred to the good prograss of tho lodge, there being now 31 financial members. The first business of the evening was a concert. The Stratford Orchestra of" fourteen instruments was in attendance, and played numeroug selections during the evening. Among the vocalists JMiss Woolley was well received in " Willie, be True to me." Mr Rapley was as successful and popular aa ever. Miss Scott sang " Golden Love" and "Scenes that aro Brightest," " the latter of which was highly appreciated. She also joined in a duet, " Autumn," with, Mr Hamilton. Mr Hamilton also gave as solos " The Good Rhine Wine" and " Sleep and Dream," the Latter being highly appreciated . Professor Michallish 'gave in character several comic exhibitions. Among the visiting members present were Mr Hooker, N.G. of the Egmont Lodge(N.P.), and Mr Maud, a District Officer from New South Wales, both of whom gave interesting addresses. The addresses were interspersed with 'songs and orchestral performances in a very judicious manner. Miss Gardner, of Stratford, received well merited applause for " The Joys I have Shared with Thee," and " Forgive as I Forgive," as also did Mrs Serjeant for " Comin' through the Rye," and Mr Cooper for a comic song. Mr Lyford, V.G. of the Lodge, thanked, on behalf of the Lodge, all those who had iv any way contributed to the success of the evening.' Afterwards the room was cleared for dancing, which was kept up with great spirit for a few hours. Doubtless the prominence given to the importance of the Midhirst lodge will tend to increase the membership, and all Tvho o iter will soon feel the benefits arising from such an association.
