Le Tempt states that the Sydney Btory of the Petrel massacre is untrne, andnras circulated in the interests of the English, who are ambitious to possess the New Hebrides, and desire a chance to denounce France and break the Con • vention. It says the population, including Efate and Sandwich, is 60 English and 150 French, and surely, it contends, the French have some rights there. SLAVES MARKETED AS FOOD. Rome, March 29. A priest at Allaire, in Franco, has reported to the Vatican that slaves are extensively marketed in some villages of Abang, in Africa, and killed, their joints being selected for food beforehand. FISHERMEN CARRIED TO SEA. St. Joiins, March 29. During a storm 50 Newfoundland fishermen were carried seaward on tfn ice-floe. Steam tugs were sent to the rescue, and tjok the men ou board, but two of them died from cold. SILVER PROBLEM. Mexico, March 29. The Government has decided to call a siver convention of the bi-metallic nations in antnin. The United States will send delegates.
