CATHOLIC PICNIC.
The racecourse had an animated appearance when the annual picnic in connection with the Catholic schools was held. There was a large attendance, and a very enjoyable time was spent. The sports arrapged by Messrs S. Collins and J. Bennett, assisted by Fathers McKenna and Flood, were keenly contested. The ladies' events caused a large amount of interest, and they acquitted themselves well, both in the race and the tug-of-war. The old men's race was another very interesting event, and caused great merriment. There were numerous races for the boys and girls, and substantial prizes were awarded to the successful competitors. The quarter mile race was one of the chief events of the day. Mr J. H. Parker presented a medal to be awarded to the winner of this race. An exciting race resulted in Master Gilmour winning. The Committee race resulted —Mr P. G. Smith first and Mr S. Collins second. The tea supplied was excellent, and the caterer, Mr Revell, did his part in a praiseworthy manner. The committee consisting of Messrs P. G. Smith, S. Collins, J. Bennett, J. Hart, sen., and J. H. Parker, assisted by Fathers McKenna and Flood, worked well and heartily to make the outing a success, and were amply rewarded by the signs of pleasure which the children's smiling faces evinced. The ladies-who so kindly helped — Mesdames Beadle, Bennett, sen., Collins, Oliver, Claffey, Parker, and Ryan, and Misses Jones, Radford, Beadle, Reynolds, Parker, and Mulcaster — are also deserving of great praise for their untiring efforts to make the children comfortable. The Committee wish to thank Messrs Paul and Standish, trustees of the racecourse, for allowing the picnic to be held there.
