THE COAL EXPERT.
Mr E. M. Smith has had an interview
with Mr H. T. "Wales, the coal expert who has beed. commissioned, to report in the tbe Coal-fields in Mr Joshua Jones' lease at Mokan. Mr Smith showed Mr Wales his samples of coal etc. and patent fuel, and explained how it was proposed to use them in the iron- and steel work. Experiments were conducted in Mr "Wales' presence, which surprised the expert beyond measure. Mr Smith also fully explained the iron and steel samples, and expressed the opinion that the coal and iron trade would have to be amalgamated to be a success. Mr "Wales enquired what Mr Smith would want to go home with
his samples to England, bnt Mr Smith promised to see him on his return from _ Mokau at the end of the present or the beginning of next week.
In the R.M. Court this (Tuesday) morning, a case, E. Stockman v. W. Humphries, was called on, and adjourned till 2.30 o'clock. The plaintiff, for whom Mr Roy appeared, claimed £1 Is as Witness' expenses for a day in the District Court. Professor Richard's party, with all their luggage, who were carried on by steamer to Wellington on Friday last, arrived this Tuesday morning, and were busily occupied all day in assisting the Professor to get ready for his opening here. Tomorrow at 9 o'clock the Professor will be ready to be consulted at the Alexandra Hall, and in the-erening he will deliver his first lecture on his system of treatment. The Professor states that the first part of the lecture will be devoted to an explanation, with practical illustrations of his methods, and the second part will be of an entertainment character. A popular concert in connection with St. Mary's choir will be given this (Tuesday) evening in St. Mary's Schoolroom. The following local candidates have successfully passed in their New Zealand University Matriculation Examination :—: — H. Hine, Tikorangi ; F. T. Bellringer, High School, New Plymouth ; and A. R. Standish, College, Wanganui. A telegram from Auckland states that Messrs McArthur & Co. have decided to carry on business as usual, but to close their Wellington house, as the offers made for the business have not come -up to their expectations. There was a large concourse of people to hear the Band concert in front of the Government Buildings on Monday night, when the following programme was gone throngh / — March, ''Colonel's Parade": Selection, "Cross of Jerusalem"; Selection, ''Doris"; "Lena Waltzes"; ''Till we meet again " Waltz ; Polka, " Venus"; Fantasia, ''Echoes of the day"; Schotti3che, " Orinthia "; "Express " Galop ; " Go<l Save the Queen."
