A PRETTY CONCEIT.
The enormous sales of the Wntorbury have led firms who do not care £>r a steady turnover at a legitimate profit to explore the purlieus of the Continent for clieap inferior " tickers" — we do not call them watchcB — with which to " run tho Wateroury.' These possess one virtuo only— that of showing the dealer a return of some 150 per cent on his outlay. That they should keep time is a matter of no moment so long us they reseinb'o the Watcrbury in outward appearance, style of casing, &c, with sufficient closeness to deceive a careless or unwary purchaser. Finns doing this often say to us •' What do we care ; we can make fivo shillings a watch more on them thon we nan on yours ; and as to keeping time, well, our troubles about that." Buyers requiring reliable watche* can trust the Waterbury, and the puolic requiring the correct time should see that they get it. The 'gents' or ladies Waterbury, gold filled, or in sterling silver, are handsome, inexpensive, and durable ; whilst the nickol varieties uro so well known that they require no further recommendation, It is a pretty conceit for here and there a stray trader to think his imports of the " Nebuchadnezzar," the Millonium,' the "Gonbang 1 or some other specially titled monstrosity has any effect on the Watei bury market, whilst for c cry watch he nervously orders over one hundred Wutorburys are always afloat for New Z9aland. Tho real el ength of. tho Waterbury lies in its absolute reliab lity, in other wordß its absolute refusal to keep anything but tho coirect time Wo sometimes see 'i tickers ' — we still bar them any other title — offered for sale which are eal'y wonderful combinations, fhoy not only exhibit the whole of the celestial bodies on tl eir faces, but keep time, or profess to, tell you the slate of the money market, the amount of any particular member's indebtedness at Bellamy's, and ho name of the next bank to reconstruct nAu tralja. The Waterbqry does n.ot do this. Jt simply keeps correct time. a.nd goes on doing so.
