ATTEMPT TO ROB COLONIAL BANK AT FEILDING.

PLUCKY CONDUCT OF A BANK

OFFICER. We take the following from the Fei'ding Times of Monday last :— " At half-p st nine on Saturday night the Feilding branch of the Colonial Bank was burglariously entered by a man named Joh. Knight. From particulars to hand it appears that Mr 0 Wakelin, accountant of the bank, who" is just recovering from a serious illncHK, entered his bedroom to retire to rest, having previously been into the public office and taken the revolver out of the teller's desk, which is the usual custom When hd entered tho bedroom he was considerably surprised to see a man in the room rnnsacking the chest of drawers, lie having gained nn entrance through tho bedroom window, Instantly he pointed tne revolver at the stranger's head, and at tha same time requested him to hold up l>is hands. This request the man immediiately complied with. Mr Wakelin then orderrd him to march out of tho bank and to the police station, where he was securely locked up. On being searched a stone mouqied in a sling was found in his pocket, On being questioned as to lie reason for having the stone, the man stated that he carried it for the purpose of breaking into a jeweller's shop. The affair has caused quite a sensation , and has been the talk of tho town. Mr Wakelin deserves gteul credit for the presence of mind shown especially when it ia remembered ho 18 recovering from an attack of typhoid fever. At eleven o'clock on Monday morning the prisoner, who wae charged under the name of Josoph Knight, waß brought before Messrs Khcrvill and Kirlon, J.P's. and, on the app'ication of Constable Tuohy, the case was romanded uutil Thursday next, at the same hour.
