BUTTER PACKAGES-SEASON 1893-94.
TO THE EDITOB.
Sib, — The butter season is again at hand, and, important as tho matter is, there appears to be still the satno uncertainty anent the package. At the latter part of last season a large amount of speculative talk was indulged in, and many theories wore advanced to account for tho fa'lure in tho keeping qualities of our staple product. I think your readers will remember that wliito pine (seasoned and unseasoned) cumo in for a large slinro of the blaruo. Can it Ihon be possible that our factory owners, manager*, and farmers aro ready to risk their produce, their names, and, in fact, the name of the district, by usiog tho white pine box ugnin ? We hear that some thousands of pounds were lost last season through the butler in wliito pine boxes becoming mi dewed in transit; if so, aro our dealers prepared to run the tiskof purchasing butter in white pine boxes for the English market ? 1 vory much doubt if tho English dealers will be caught this season as they were last, so whatever losses are made Taranaki will have to bear. Kegs appear to bo quite out of favor with the English buyers, and therefore cannot bo expected to obtain the best result. Frequent reports roach us of the superiority of, and the high price obtained for Victorian butler. Wo also hear of largo numbers of Pond's boxes being sent to Australia. If this accounts for the difference, our dealers should know it; if not, the matter is of such importance to the district that every possiblo effort should bo ma le to obtain a package that will meet all the requirements of the trade. Hoping this will move a moro able pen than mine —I am, &c.' H. J. B. New Plymouth, July 27.
