When lwas a young man I spent ssveral years ia the Soatb, residing for awhile at Port Gibson, on the Mississippi Hirer. A great deal of litigation was going on there about that titns, aad it who not an easy matter to obtain a jury. One day I was summoned to act in that capacity, and repaired to court to get excased. On my name bning called I informed his honor, tho ju Ige, that lwas not a freeholder^ and, Hi rofore, not qualified to serve. "lam stopping for' the time being at this place." " You board at tho hotel, I presume ?',' . " I take my meals there, bat have rooms ia another part 'of ' tne v town, where I lodge.'* ( . |
" So you keep baohelor's hall ?" "Yes, air." .. ... , " How long have you-, lived in thai manner?" $ ftf t "About six months."
"I~ think >iyoa ate . qualified," gravely remarked the judge, " for X have! never known a man to, keep;, bachelor's 1 hall the length of time yon name who bad not'dirt enough in his room to 'make him a freeholder. The court does not excuse you.' 1
