FARES FOR WORKING MEN.

Sir,— lt 6eems to me that it is time the low fares charged to the working classes ut home, by the Great Eastern Railway, were extended to the working classes of New Zealand. That company conveys workmen from and to Enfiel ', a distance of twenty miles, for tho return journey, for 2d ; the Cheap Trains Bill has been introduced into Parliament by Sir Blundell Maple, and has passed the second loading to compel the other companies to be also , liberal in the matter ; as the London Globe, a Conservative paper of the 23rd Febnury last, says, " What may be hoped is, that the companies, noting the determination of tho Legislature that a crying want shall be supplied, may themselves take the required action, and that a compulsory law, though it may be placed on tho statute book, will seldom have to bo involved. 1 While on this subject, 1 would repeat a suggestion that I uiado to the late Premier, that the Gjvurnmont should acquire land at tho flag 6tationß ( n the railways, for j sett laments of working men to start in life en, in connection with cheap fare* on the railways. The Government then had not tbo power by Act which it now possesses to carry out this suggestion. — I am, &c, Cuas. Brown.
