Mr Gladatono, in reooiving a deputation from the Imperial Federation League, discouraged tho propisals for calling Colo nidi Conferences without firet framing a practical scheme for formation of a Council for Imperial dofonce. .The Government, ho siid, would not support a preferential tariff. Mr Gludstono declines to receivo a deput ition from tlio Empire Trade League, on the ground that tho scheme is unjust to tho in*63 of tho community and unfavorable to industry and ontorpriso.
