PAHIATUA MURDER CASE.
|Pta PREBS ASSOCIATION. | Wellington, April 7. — The charge against William J. Smith, of having murdered one Jacob Jacobsen, near Pahiatua, in October or November, 1890, was begun on Thursday in the Resident Magistrate's Court, and was resumed to-day, when evidence was produced of the prisoner's sale in November, 1890, of tho camp gear to a sottler in the district. Tho latter remarked he should want a receipt in case Jacobson turned op ami put in a claim. Smith said there was no fear of hi* doing so Witneus mentioned to Smith that he had seen Jacobsen in possession of a large sum of money, and the prisoner said ho \v:is very foolish to sli w it to people. The same witness testified to assisting in the search at Jaeobsen's camp hst Xmas. Ho sa : d iho buttons, boot, too plato, braces, and metal were takon out of the ashes in the fireplace Later on an o!d pair of blui-hers wore picked up, which he know to be Smith's by the cuts ii the leather. The theory of the prosecution is that Surilh had only ono pair of boots, and whon he left he hel ed himself to Jacobsen's clothes and boots.
