POLICE COURT.
Monday, January 16.— Before W. Stuart, Esq., R.M., and C. K. Stock, Eaq , J.P.
DISTOBBING THE SALVATION A.RMY.. — William Simpson and George Langman were charged with disturbing a Salvation Army meeting at Lepperton on January 11. The former was aleo charged with assaulting Lieutenant Bloomfield, on the same night, by striking him with his fist. — Both defendants, for whom Mr Kerr appeared, ple.ded not guilty.— Evidence for and against was given, aud Mr Eerr having addressed tin Bench, their orships* retired to consider the eviience. On returning to Court the Resident Magistrate stated that they had decided to convict Simpson for the assault, but as it was not a grave assault they would only inflict a line of 5s and costs. With regard to the charge of disturbing the Salvation Army, the Bench considered the case proved. As Langman did not take a prominent part, he would be fined £2, but as Simpson was evidently the ringleader ho would be fined £5, both to divide costs. — Mr Stock intimated that the Bench were determined to put down larrikinism, and the next ono who was convicted before the Court would bo sent to prison. Ho also stated that he was sorry in this case that a taste of " the cat " could not be given. — The alternatives were ono month in Langman'B case, and three in Simpson's case. The accuse! were granted eight weeks to pay. The Court rose.
