DANGER OF EATING CANNED PROVISIONS.

TARANAKE COUNTY COUNCIL.

Among the papers read before tho Medical Congress recently bold in Sydney, was one by the New South Wales Government Analyst on " Poisoning Caused by Canned Brovisions.' He stated as the result of his experience that there \ver« several ways in which poison may be generated in tins con taining food. It is not neccssar}' to go into the details of the chemical proceeses involved, but the practical conclusion, arrived at are of general public intcros'. Mr Hamlet urges that there should be plenty of fat with meat or ox tongues an I of sweet oliva with sardines. A box of sardines from which tho oil has leaked should bo rejected. In warm sultr, weather the contents of a tin should be con snmed immediately it is opened, and any thing that remains should bo destroyed. Praclictically, we gather, there 13 no danger if, when tho tin is opened tho interior surface if found to re bright and f co from corrosion, and if tho contents are used immediately after Kjing opened A very suggestive ca«e in point is reported in the Home papers Dr Dan ford Thomas re ently held an inquest at Islington on a messenger named Charles Cook, tigcd twenty seven, who way poiso cd ficm citing somo tinned salmon. It appoarsthst tho salmon was bought and openod on a Friday evening, and Co k uto abnit a third of it without experiencing any ill eftocts On Saturday Cook invited a fel-loNV-lodsfer named Pain to help him in finishing tho salmon, and the latter ate some. On Sunday both were seized with diarrhcei aid acute pains in tho stomach, for which they sought rcPof at tho royal Free Hospital. They weic given inedi cine, and their case wusenteicd as one of " poisoning by tinned talt-:on." Cook thoslly after died rather unexpectedly. Mr Parton. a solicitor, who represented tho Preserved Foodi Saction of the London Chamber of Commence, said of the many thousanl of tins of salmon imported into England, tho contents of which were eaten, there had never hojn traced a single easo of fata', or even ill, effects proauccd where tho li-.li h.ni all been consumed when the tin was freshly openod. Expjsiiro and keeping of tin lish u\h likely to turn it unwholesome. Having heard medic.il evidence, the jury found tli.it i death was duo to gastrito an 1 enleiitis, I produced by eating sdloin which ha • been exposed to UlO air. The roil dung r undoubtedly lies in eating tiunu I provis ions uftei they had been opened and kept for some time, and tho public would do well to take a ooto of tho faot.
