POET LAUREATE.

It is reported that Mr William Morris has declined the appointment as Poet Laureate. LARGE FIRE AT MILWAUKEE. New York, October 30.

A tremendous fire occurred at Milwaukee, the most populous town of Wisconsin, situated on the west shore of Lake Michigan. Six hundred houses, i he gas works, and many business blocks were destroyed. Tha damage is estimated at twenty million dollars. The firemen used dynamite to destroy buildings with a view to checking the conflagration. The fire originated in a public house, and as a hurricane was blowing at the time, it spread with great rapidity. Chicago and other cities sent firemeu and engines to cope with the ilames. The area devastated is two-thirds of a mile by thrcc-'inartcrs of a mile. Two firemen lost their lives. Accommodation is being found in the churches and schools for those burnt out.
