RAID ON PARIHAKA.
DOG TAX DEFAULTER ARRESTED. [telegraphed b? special reporter] .

Pungarehu, August 23. — Tho police made a raid on Parihaka this morning, for the purpose of arresting defaulters in connection with the dog tax, Inspector Pardy, Sergeant Stagpoole, and Constables Soymour, Christie, Scully, Twomey, Salmon, Hbkman, Stacey, Grey, and Leahy, and Mr Willi.im Gray, interpreter, comprised the party. A start was made from Pungarehu Redoubt at half-past four o'clock, all walking, except Inspector Pardy, the interpreter, and Constable Scully. It was pitch dark, and h avy rain was falling. The road up to the villago was in a fearful state, the mud at places being almost knee doep. On reaching the ontrance to tho villago a halt was made for half-an-hour for daybreak. As soon as it became partially light the force went into the village. Throe whares wero searched in rapid succession, and two " wanted " Maoris wero secured, but one got away by going through the back window of a wharo. The other, Piripi (Philip), was brought out and lodged in the lock up at Pungarohu. There were Bomo others wanted, but they could not be found in the village. [ The Maoris were completely taken by surprise, and made no resistance, but ono woman got very excited, and threatened Inspector Pardy with a piece of wood. Inspector Pardy warned the Maoris if any constable was obstructed or wounded ho wonld arrest To Whiti. The party wero about an hour in the vil'age. The prisoner Piripi was sent on to New Plymouth later in the day. Constable Hickman wont up to tho village, where ho found things quiet, and To Whiti appoarod to be much cast down. Recently Te Whiti has been making prophecies, one being that an array like countless sands would come to Parihaka.
The majority of the police have left for borne.
Tho reason of tho above raid on Paribaka, it may be stitod, was owing to the Maoris brouking tho laws of the country. Constable Hickman arrested a Maori at Pungarehu tho other day for not obeying an order of the Court in connection with the payment of tho dog tax. When the constable seized his man a friend of the latter came to the rescue, and after a scuffle the two Mao r is got away and made for their home at Parihaka.
Inspector Pardy is not the man to allow a rescue to bo made without Bhowing that ho is all powerful, and according malo v snrprise visit on Paiihaka with some of the pick men of his force, and has secured one of the men he wanted, who is now on his way to the New Plymouth gaol.
