STRATFORD NEWS.

I'FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.] March 17, —The Caledonian Sports have inet the fate, which in a climate so variable as ours alwnys.lies in wait for outdoor gatherings, whether for business or pleasure. There were many misgivings last evening, alboit the more sanguine prophociod a perfect day, the dust laid, grass freßh and green, a cool breeze tempering the too genial rays of the bright sun. It has all come about except the genial rays ; the dust is laid, the grass fresh and green ; the cool breeze is oa hand, but instead of tempering the rays, it is raising the t> mper • Caledonians, stern and wild, sheltering under Wilson’s verandah, are thinking bitter things of St Patrick, who has gone to the Norman by Show, leaving StSwithin in charge hero Tho Town Lake which the recent dry weather had con verted into an arid waste of shingle, is rapidly recovering its wonted beauty, and giving, back to Stratford that air of aquatic splonaour which has heretofore made her unique amongst the cities of tho oarth. But tho Caledonian mind, above all things practical, sees only in tho swelling waters of the lako a moans of retrieving the fortunes of tho’ day. .Arrangements are already in progress for holding an impromptu Regatta and Aquatic Carnival, should the weather, as seems likely, assume towards evening a moro conciliatory attitude.

The sports, concert, and dance, will, be held on Friday 25th, and it is hoped that the Railway Department will bo induced to run a special train from Now Plymouth and Inglewood. , . A printer’s error in last week’s Stratford notes has givon occasion to tho ungodly to scoff at your correspondent's reputation for accuracy. I ani undo to credit the Stratford stono crusher with the extraordinary .feat of crushing 180 yards of stono in tho day. It should have been 108’ yards, a good day’s work enough. Anyhow tho “ constant reader” has tougher bits to swallow than an odd 72 yards of road metal.

Tho Cardiff Co-operativo Dairy Factory had'turned out to tho end of February 60 tons of cheose (the public can swallow this without fear of indigestion). The reports that have been circulated as to the high price obtained are premature.
