THE GROWTH OF LONDON.
Tlio City is Five Times as Large Now as it was in 1800. We t.re too frequently disposed to think . of the rapid growtn of Australian cities ns merely incidental to tho settlement of a new country', and to regard the European oities ns old and stationary. It is true that their nuclei are ancient, but so far as the.greater part of their built up area is concerned they' are almost or quite as new as lhe Australian cities. They, like our own population centres, have grown unprecedentedly in receDt decades as tho .re ult of modern transportation and industrisl systems. Thus, London to-day (is five times as large as it was at. the opening of .the preßßnt century. From >900,000 at that time, tho population of London grew to 1,500,000 in 1830 ; and by ,1855 it -had increased to 2,500,000. Since 1855 it has more than doubled. In large, numerically speaking, and closely ciowded cities, where the breathing space is confined, aud where the iniorobeß and gorms of diseaso a r e inhaled by every breath druwn into the lungß, disease gotß a foothold and spreads more rapidly than in open conntry places. Consumption, Brights disease, diabetes, indigestion and liver complaints attack people: though, in all situations, and usually ond fatally if neglected. The first symptoms as dimness of eight, tirod languid feeling, headache, neuralgia, &c., should be enrol by regular doßeß of Clements Tonic : this is the greatest and most successful remedy known to science, it cures disease when doctors and their remedies , fail. Witness the following proof “Kangaroo Valley, N.S.W., April 3 1889. Dear Sir, —I have very much pleasure ipi bearing witness to the great value :of Clements Tonic in cases of lassitude, nervousness, and constitutional debility generally. For more than 12 months I was a maityr to extreme lassitude, loss of appetite, sleeplessness and their concomitant train of physical troubles, so much so that I feared 1 should have to abandon my profession as a journalist, writing being particularly irksome and laborious to me. I tried several advertised tonics(?) with little or no good results, and began .0 think my case beyond the power of medicine to cure. However, seeing your tonio advertised in some of my exchanges, I conoluded to try it ap a dernier ressort, and I am pleased to say the remit was most satisfactory. After taking one bottle I found my appetite much improved : 1 could sleep more soundly, and felt refreshed next morning. I continued the medicine, taking in all six large bottles, and gradually all my distressing symptoms disappeared, I now feel myself stronger than ever, and as near perfect health as a man who has to bear tho strain of constant literary work can expect to be. I can confidently recommend Clements Tonic to all persons Buffeiing from loss of nerve force through sickness or mental overwork, and am most happy to support my testimony with my signature, and remain, dear sir, yours faithfully, P. Jefferson Wallace, oditor aud proprietor, Kangaroo Valley Pioneer." Send for. our book with full particulars, Sbst free', from F. M. Clements, Newtown f.S.W., and all chemists and storekeepers
