The Times of Cyprus says : — " It is under* stood the; Government nowldeclinos to authorise excavations by private individuals in pursuit of adventurous gains ; reserving what remains of our. hidden treasures- for the (operations of scientific societies andropresentatives of publio museums. Not .more than ten miles distant from the Central, Police Station at Nicosia tho ' inhabitants 'of a couple of villages in that' district granted to each other permission, in fact todlc French leave, to make excavations in search of antiquities, and for three whole months turned armed with pick-axes and shovels ; working diligently all day in invading ancient ttombs in search of articles of value. The" work being exceedingly profitable, it was pursued with corresponding energy ; over 200 tombs were opened and the loot was great, comprising besides other objects jewels of silver and gold and precious, stones.
