STRATFORD NEWS.

[FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.] January 2. — At tho Manganui Road Board's meeting to-day contracts wore let for the Pembroke Road formation and gravelling. Wr Mulree secured the formation, and tbo two gravelling contracts were let to Messrs Brought and Messrs Holloway & Co., respectively. The week's festivities brought a couple of inebriates before the local justices. One was discharged with a caution; and the other mulcted in a pound fine. The latter culp r it was a person against whom a prohibition order ia in force, but it could not be ascertained through whom he obtained the drink. This was unfortunate, It may possibly be the outcome of perverted good nature, this obtaining liquor for the weaker vessels whom the law endeavours to protect, bnt a much more likely motive is defiance of the law, and pure devilment. My views on the drink question certainly do not err generally on the stfe of over strictness, -but if I had to sit in judgment on a clear case of obtaining drink for a prohibited person, I would mako things sultry enough for tho tempter to give him a foretaste of that heated hereafter ho layß himself out for. La grippo appears to be burning itself out as far as this district is concerned, not many freah cases being reported. Mr E. 6. Allsworth, of the Egmont SelLlr, who has had as tough a struggle with the enemy as is possiblo without giving .the undertaker a job, is gradually recovering, a week's chango of air at Waverloy having proved, beneficial. Who Btarted tho yarn about a pound a day being offered hero for grass seed hands ? As far as I can ascertain, there is not a word of truth in it, p'enty of men being available at half tho money. Considering the state of the woather, the Exhibition was well patronised on the afternoon and evening of Friday, the closing day. Mr W. Courtney gave a very interesting lecture, illustrated by limelight views. I am glad to hear that the financial result is regarded by the management as satisfactory. The Exhibition itnolf undoubtedly made its mark, and its success will recompense the hard worked managers for a very trying weok. Tho first shipment of cheese from tho Stratford Factory is now on its way to London. Tho quality was pronounce Iby an expert to be tip-top. The factory is now receiving nearly 1000 gallons of milk daily. _™—~— — .
