The thoroughbred stallion lngomar dropped dead near Hamilton on Thursday. Entries for the Spring Cattle Show to be, held on Thursday next, close with tho Secretary, Mr C. T. Mills, at five o'clock this (Saturday) evening. Mr Box, of Waitara, and Mr Budge, of Hawera, are acting. as agents, and will receive entries' up to five o'clock. We have to draw attention to the United' Insurance Company's advertisement notifying that the Company is now prepared to accept fire and marine insurances at lowest rates. As the Company's financial position is a strong one, and it has the reputation of being prompt and liberal in the settlement of its claims, it will no donbt receive a share of publio support. The principal office for New Zealand has been established in Wellington, under tho management of Mr J. S. Jameson, the Resident Secretary. A meeting of the Chamber of Corainerc© Committee was hold on Friday night, when the following resolutions were papsed :— (1), " That the attention of the Railway Commissioners be called to tho increase of passenger traffic, especially on | the through trains on Tuesday and Friday of each week, with a view of providing additional carriage accoinmoda- | tion ; also to the difficulty of through passengers obtaining seats at Palmerston, and the Committed suggest that the number of through passengers should be telegraphed from either side to Palmerston, so that accommodation can be reserved for them ; (2), That in the opinion of the Committee, an experiment snould be made in the way of running three through trains a week, at any rate during the summer months ; (3), that a letter be written to tho Minister of Lands, calling attention to the number of disappointed applicants for sections, and asking him to take steps to place more land in the market, and that a copy of this letter be sent to the Chief Survoyor." Tho Hon. P. Buckley, AttorneyGeneral, visited the penal settlement at Milford lately. The Wanganui Herald states that during his round of inspection be recognised in one of the prisoners a ; former client. " Hello !" exclaimed the genial Attorney- General, " What bringa you hore?" The luckless one promptly replied, " Because 1 could not get yon to defend me, sir !" The joke was not lost upon the Hon. P. Buckley, whose memory reverted to two occasions on which he had persuaded a Wellington jury to retmn a verdict of "Not Guilty," in favor of the prisoner, who had not fared so we'l on his last trial, and was, in consequence, studying the interesting geology of Milford ! Mr Buckley recogniaed, in another detenue, a half-caste who at one time had been a clerk in a lawyerr's office in Napier. " Well,*ray man, what are you doing here?" queried the visitor. "Oh, five years," softly lisped the guileless youth, as he twirled his hat and looked the picturo of innocence. " What for ?" asked Mr Buckley. The prisoner hung bis head sheepishly and twirled his hat still moro as he whispered "£50." " Ah ! I see," rejoined Mr Buckley, " Well, my lad, you see you have made a very bad bargain, and undertake to work five years for Government at £10 a year !" The lad stared blankly before him for a moment, and then exclaimed, "By Georgel I never looked at it that way before !" " Didn't you ?" replied the AttorneyGeneral. " Well, I'd advise you always to look at it that way another time. It will perhaps save you from such an uncongenialjob as the one you are now on." The advice was sound, and will, we hope, be followed. Nominations for tho Waitara New Year Race Meeting close to-night (Satuiday), at 9 o'clock. Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.8., has received a telegram stating that the Premier will be in New Plymouth next week on his way 10 Auckland. The Premier will probably arrive on Tuesday night next, and on his arrival a deputation will wait on him for the pjrpose of asking him to address a public meeting here on his return from Auckland. By the San Francisco mail, which arrived on Friday, Mr Corkill, attorney for the New Zealand Petroleum and Iron Syndicate, received copies of the Memorandum and Articles of Association of tho new Company, which, under tho title of the Tarnnaki (New Zealand) Petroleum and Iron Company, Limited, is in course of formation for the purpose of carrying on the oil boring operations at the Sugar Loaves. The share capital of the company will be £125,000, in £1 shares. 1 Mr Christie Murray concludes his series of articles on the " Antipodeans," iv the October number of the Contemporary, which have excited a sufficient amount of auger among Australians to furnish fuel for controversy for the 1 remainder of .their author's term of natural life.
