It is announced the Ameer of Afghanistan intends to pay a visit to ' England, and is desirous of the English mission going to Cabnl. CHINA DRIFTING INTO WAR. It is believed in Shanghai that China is gradually drifting into war, through her blind confidence in the strength of her army. ROYAL LETTER OF CONDOLENCE TO MRS SMITH The Queen has sent a letter to the late Hon. Mr Smith's family, expressing the esteem she held for him. The Marquis of Salisbury is deeply affected at his colleague's death. STRIKE MOVEMENTS. The employers have accepted Ben Tillett's suggestion for conference, but adhere to the original terms. Ben Tillett replies that it would bo better to accept these than extend the strike. LEADER OF COMMONS. Mr Goschen will probably succeed Mr Smith as Loader of the House of Commons. The Greek fleet will shortly mobilize nominally, for the purpose of mancewving in the Archipelago. DANISH BUTTER. Copenhagen, October 7. In the Folkething, to-day, a bill was introduced insisting that the nation should trade mark Danish butter, in order to prevent inferior quality from elsewhere being sold as a product of that country. AUSTRIA BECOMING ALARMED. Buda/Pfsth, October 8. The Hungarian Minister of Finance declires that further outlay on the army is necessary.
