STRATFORD NEWS

[FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.] October B. —Tho fiery cross ia being sent" around among the Auckland and Taranaki clans for a foray on the North Island Trunk Railway Loan. It ia estimated that there is a balance of about £80,000 left, and the object is to divert this amount to the Stratford lino. I am afraid the booty is not largo enough to stir the blood of Stratford to any great extent. If Auckland had gone in heartily with us at the time when there waa something worth going for, it might by this time have been in as good a position with regard to the Taranaki trade as is Wellington, but it " muffed" the thiner, and is now crying bittorly ovor yery-uiuch-spilt milk. So far as Stratford is concernod the subject requires handling with extreme delicacy, thero being a very reasonable fear that by grasping at tho shadow of a railway we shall lose tho reality of a road. Nothing could play better into tho hands of the Minister of Lands, the Survey Department, and other opponents of the East Road, than to bo enabled to say that, as it was intended to run a railway through the same country, the Government could not bo expected to make a Metalled road as well. The matter is one that calls for careful management, and I should prefer to see tho Stratford meeting appoint a small committee to watch events rather than take any more decided action. There is one thing the meeting cannot go wrong in, and that is in urging the Government to complete tho purchase of the Taumatamahoe Block, lying between the Waitara and the Wanganui, and through which both road and railway will have to run for many miles.
