EXCITING SCENE AT BREAKWATER.
MAN NEARLY DROWNED. An exciting scone was witnossed at tho breakwater about 5 o'clock on Tuesday evening, when a passenger by the Mahinapua named Cornelius O'Shoa fell overboard. Mr O'Shea, who is a schoolmaster, must have been in the act of stopping from tho wharf to the steamer, when ho slipped and fell into the water, carrying tho gnngway, which was drawn up, with him. Tho chief officer of the Mahinapua, Mr Spenco, was the first to observe Mr O'Shea's plight, and he and some sailors scrambled down the piles of the wharf, and after some trouble pulled the unfortunate man out of the water. To all appearances O'Shea was dead when brought on dock, but by the vigorous application of tho rules to restore the apparently drowned he was brought round, and then put into a berth. Dr. O'Carroll was telephoned for, an 1 on arrival he saw Mr O'Shea, whom I he pronounced to bo out of danger..
