I FROM OUR REdIDE\"T A-i iXT]: . ! September 18. — A Serri •„• ,i Song was ' given last evening in the Town Hall by the combined choirs of tho Stratford and Ngaire Presbyterian churches. The Service chosen was "Eva," a musical portrayal of- scenes -from the life of thelittle heroine of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," concluding with the * beautiful and pathetic death scene The Hall waa wellfilled with an attentive and thoroughly appreciative audience. Previous to commencing the service Mr Nixon, the indefatigable leader of the choirs, was presented by Mr- James Gorrie, on behalf of the Church members, with a silvermounted conductor's baton, as a mark of appreciation of his services. The narrative connecting the musical portions of the service were very effectively read by Mr McDiarmid, of New Plymouth, who at the conclusion paid a well deserved tribute to the really excellent manner in which the service had been given, remarking on the creditable rendering of the last number " Vital Spark," a difficult piece of music often shirked by amateurs. He also_ congratulated the performers on their distinct articulation. The organist • caihe in, too, for equally woll deserved commendation,. At- the close the Rev. Mr Mclritosh proposed a hearty vote of thanks to all concerned, which was carried by acclamation. • The Town Board held a special meeting last evening, and- confirmed resolutions adopting tho Lotal Bodies Loans Act, and amending a by-Inw relating to hawkers' licenses. The question of transferring the bank account was discussed and i deferred. The Clerk was instructed to take steps to advertise tlie statutary meeting in connection with the proposed loan, and the meeting adjourned till Tuesday next, at 7 p.m.
